Read Easy Ealing - helping local people who struggle to read

Do you know someone who struggles with reading? If you do, Read Easy Ealing could provide the help they need to learn to read confidently.

We don’t often think about it, but quite a few people do struggle with reading. The 2011 Skills for Life survey of the working age population found that on the Adult Literacy Core Curriculum than 6% of adults – that’s about 13,600 people in Ealing seriously struggle with reading.

Maybe they find it a struggle because they have learning difficulties, or English is a second language for them, or maybe they just didn’t learn to read very well at school.

Read Easy UK is a national charity which provides free, confidential one-to-one reading coaching for adults from trained volunteers, through locally-run, affiliated volunteer groups. Earlier this year, volunteers in Ealing set up a local Read Easy group – Read Easy Ealing to provide free, one-to-one reading tuition for people in our area. Their vision is for all adults to have the literacy skills they need to realise their potential and to live life to the full.

Very often, people who have difficulties with reading are too embarrassed to admit their difficulties and very few feel able to join an adult education class due to previous experiences of failure at school. Read Easy Ealing will offer a much more accessible, community-based and individualised approach to helping adults learn to read.

Read Easy works by matching trained volunteer local reading coaches one-to-one with non-or beginner readers. They meet twice a week for 30 minutes in a public but private space and work through a phonics-based reading programme, “Turning Pages” that has been specifically designed for adults by the Shannon Trust. It’s suitable for people who have learning difficulties and disabilities, people for whom English is a second language and people who just didn’t learn to read at school. The coach/reader relationship is open ended - typical relationships last for between 9 and 18 months.
